Virtualization

Virtualization...what does it mean?

Is this something that my business needs to stay competitive?

Way back in the “Computer Industry” past (5-10 years ago) when you asked your IT guy, “I want to run this software in my organization. What is it going to take?” The most common response was (and still is) a new server. New servers are costly to purchase, costly to setup, costly to maintain, and costly to service.

This proliferation of a single server for a single software application has driven the need for organizations to find a better solution. The power and cooling costs alone were quickly outpacing the benefit of adding the new software. The solution is to virtualize multiple physical servers into a single hardware server. The virtualized servers still operate is if they are physical, but they are sharing a single hardware resource. This allows organizations to scale their operations and add as many software applications as needed.

Within the next 5 years, every organization will have some percentage of their network virtualized. Benefits to virtualization are:

  • Reduced cost of ownership
  • Ability to maintain older applications on newer hardware
  • Scalable
  • High Availability
  • Simplified Disaster Recovery
